WordWhisk Options...

There are several useful options available in WordWhisk that support several types of search results presentation in addition to enhancing the dictionary’s word contents.

To get to the Options screen, simply tap on the ‘Options’ found on either the “Find a Word” or the “Find Two Words” screen in the upper right corner.

Once the ‘Options’ window appears, you will see several ways to customize how the results of all searches will be presented.

Word Length

The first setting controls whether only words of a specific length are found and presented or if all words within a range of lengths are presented.

Note that the word length setting only applies to results shown for the “Find a Word” screen (not for the “Find Two Words”).

Results Presentation

The next setting specifies if results are shown in groups by usage frequency or as a single group ignoring usage.

When “by frequency” is chosen, words are shown alphabetically within each frequency.

The third setting option controls which frequency categories of words to show in the results.

Many words found in the ‘Rare’ frequency are truly rare but we have occasionally found that some of the ‘Rare’ words accrue extra points in apps such as Wordscapes.

When a word search is performed, while only those words in the enabled frequencies will be shown, the count of the number of words found shown at the top of the resulting word list gives the number of all words found in all frequency categories.

By default, only categories that have words to show after a search are presented. Checking the ‘Show empty categories’ checkbox will have all categories presented, empty or not. For the empty categories “Nothing found” will be shown.

Word Presentation

The fourth setting option, “For results show:”, controls how much of each found word is initially presented.

If ‘partial word’ is selected then the ‘+’ control will be shown on the results list to allow more letters to be exposed, one at a time.

Add Words

Words may be added to the WordWhisk dictionary. Just tap on the “Add a Word”…

A list of words that have already been added is presented. Enter the new word and tap the ‘Add’ button.

If the word already exists in the dictionary then a notification will be presented. Otherwise, it will be shown in the list of added words.

Remove Words

Words can also be removed from the dictionary. To do so, tap on the “Remove a Word” button…

As you type in the letters of the word to be removed, you will see indicators showing if the word actually exists in the dictionary.

Once you’ve entered the word you would like to remove from the dictionary, tap the ‘Remove’ button.

All removed words will be shown in the window and you will see a confirmation that the newly removed word is now gone.

If you run across any horribly offensive words that you believe should be permanently removed from the dictionary, please do not hesitate to send us an email with your suggestion. You can do so by tapping on the “Give Some Feedback” button.

There are some limitations in WordWhisk of which it is important to be aware.

  • Proper nouns are not included in the WordWhisk dictionary.
  • Should a word search result in more than a couple of thousand possible candidates, only the first thousand or so are actually presented. In such a case, try reducing the list of potential letters and/or specify some ‘known’ letters to help reduce the candidates to a few hundred.
  • The longest words in the WordWhisk dictionary are 22 characters long. This means that search length that is entered can be no longer than 22. This also applies to “Find Two Words” where the total length of both words to be found cannot be greater than 22.
